MotoObsession.com Product Review: Race Tech Gold Valves
What are Race Tech Gold Valves? Gold valves are replacement valve bodies for motorcycle suspension. The Valves come as
kits, separately for forks and shocks. The kits come complete with instructions, valves, shims, seals and thread locker.
When you buy Race Tech Gold Valves, Race Tech usually includes an instructional video as well as an ample supply of
Race Tech stickers.
The purpose of Gold Valves is specifically for tuning a suspension to the needed performance characteristics required by a rider.
The reason tuning may be necessary is simply because a stock suspension is designed for a target rider weight and riding style.
Though modern motocross bikes have several suspension adjusters for tuning, these adjustments are often outside of the scope of what
a rider may need. If a particular stock suspension is within the target zone of a rider, revalving is likely not needed. For
many riders though, this is often not the case.
Gold valves are available in several types as described below (Descriptions are from the Race Tech website).
Type 1 Fork Gold Valve Kits
Race Tech's original bolt-on fork valving system for cartridge forks. Our Gold Valves triple the flow area over stock pistons,
putting valving control on the shim stack instead of the piston. This results in outstanding tuneability, improved control,
traction, plushness and bottoming resistance. Includes complete instructions, Gold Valve Pistons, Valving Charts, and Valving
Shims. Most models also include the "Technical Edge Fork Maintenance and Gold Valve Installation Video".
G2-R Fork Gold Valves
Race Tech's revolutionary new G2-R Gold Valves are dual port, billet pistons designed to optimize the loading of the shims while
improving flow. These versatile valves blow away all previous limitations by creating improved traction and a feel
like no other valve in the world - guaranteed! G2-R Gold Valves can be preloaded (digressive) and/or restricted (progressive).
Dirt, Road Race, Street, Off-road, and Supermoto. G2-R's are so versatile they can be valved to work like both Type 1 & Type 2
Gold Valves and more.
Fork Rebound Gold Valve Kit
Many stock rebound valving systems are grossly inadequate. No matter what modifications are attempted, the stock valves
will never perform with precision or control. If you race or simply want the best, Race Tech's Rebound Gold Valves are
the solution to improved traction. Used by major factory teams. These valve increase flow area, putting valving control
on the shim stack instead of the piston. This results in outstanding tuneability, improved control and traction.
G3-LD Shock Gold Valve Kit
G3-LD Gold Valves provide better control for any rider by creating more shim leverage and decreasing the angular shim deflection.
The benefit is a more consistent damping and faster lap times. Kit includes Shock Gold Valve Piston, Instructions, Valving Shims,
Valving Charts and a "Technical Edge Shock Maintenance and Gold Valve Installation Video".
Type 1 Shock Gold Valve Kit
Top suspension performance requires firm bottoming resistance with plushness at the same time. Even the best suspension tuners
can only make the stock valving design work so well. The Gold Valve Shock Suspension System is a proven bolt-on shock valving
system that improves control, traction, performance and bottoming resistance.
*Increased flow area puts valving control on the shim stack for outstanding tuneability from trail to supercross.
*Improved, long wearing, low friction sealing design decreases fade.
*Includes complete Instructions, Shock Gold Valve Piston, Valving Shims, Valving Charts.
*Includes a "Technical Edge Shock Maintenance and Gold Valve Installation Video" for ease of installation.
I have done several suspensions with Race Tech Gold Valves and the fitment has always been perfect. Machining work on the valves is
top notch and the included hardware is excellent.
Ease of installation
Anyone with a decent mechanical prowess can install Gold Valves. Race Tech does an excellent job of providing instructions, so those who may
be unfamiliar with suspension tuning can still do the job. This is not to say the job is easy though. Tackling a suspension job demands careful
attention to detail, patience and cleanliness. Anything less would have disasterous results. Additionally, one must understand ahead of time
the needed special tools. Even though motocross suspension can take on serious demands on the race track, the parts that make suspension
work are delicate and machined to exacting tolerances. Suspension tuning is not for the "get it done in a hurry" mentality.
Buying Gold Valve kits hurts the pocket book a little, especially if you do the whole suspension. Nevertheless, doing the job yourself is a lot cheaper than
sending your suspension to a tuner. A Fork Gold Valve kit will cost you around $170.00 to $200.00. You still need the tools, the oil and possibly springs.
In my opinion, the Gold Valves themselves are no more special than stock suspension valves. The motorcycle manufacturer engineers are no dummies and they
certainly know how to build suspension. The whole point of using Gold Valves is for setting the suspension correctly for you, the unique rider. As I said
earlier, it may very well be that your stock suspension is not right for you. In my case, I always have to revalve to get my suspension close to
what it should be. Stock motorcycles are not usually tuned for 220 pound riders like me.
It is certainly important that suspension valves be machined correctly and Race Tech does the job well. The real magic, however, is in their knowledge.
Buying Gold Valves gives you the privilege of Race Tech giving you your custom valve specifications based on rider weight and ability. Furthermore, they
include what is the recommended oil type and quantity. The verdict is that Race Tech knows exactly what they are doing. Their recommended
settings are very close to ideal. Every time I have revalved my suspension according to their recommendations, I have always been impressed with the
results. Having said that, the settings are not necessarily perfect. In fact, I find myself going several settings stiffer on high speed shim stacks. Still,
it is amazing to me their recommendations are so good given that there are many variables within a suspension
that could affect these settings.
I give Race Tech Gold Valves an A+!
